The Stones don't sound nearly as young as Buddy Holly did on his original recording. Having said that, every other aspect of this song is undeniable, from the sound of the opening riff to the groove to the harmonies supporting Jagger's vocal as he's more than living up to his position as one of the rock-and-roll bad boys. But if you had to draw a line and say, "OK, now this is where I start to feel uncomfortable," spirited rockers involving the whipping of slaves while extolling the virtues of a woman called Brown Sugar who tastes so good "just like a black girl should" might be a place to start. No one wants political correctness from the Rolling Stones. I would, too, if I could get behind the lyrics. But this one holds up fine to past accomplishments.Ī lot of people would have put this single higher. And the opening line is classic Stones: "If I could stick my pen in my heart and spill it all over the stage/Would it satisfy ya/Would it slide on by ya/Would you think the boy is strange?" And that's before Mick Jagger grabs the mike demanding satisfaction (which rhymes with girl reaction) while letting you know how much everyone else is just bringing him down, from the man on the radio with his useless information to the laundry ad about how white his shirts can be. It's the 50th anniversary of the Rolling Stones releasing "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction)," a single whose opening riff alone would be enough to put Keith Richards in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
